Last week, New York City was overtaken with fashionistas (and fashionistos) attending the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week events. The focus was on looks for spring 2013, and the world’s top designers never disappoint! Gorgeous gowns, structured suits, wild makeup, and intricately-woven hair made their way down the runways past impressed industry insiders and celebrities alike. All week long, those not fortunate enough to have been invited to this iconic showcasing of new styles sat in front of computers across the globe, awaiting news and photos of the trends for next season. I, as one of these wanna-be style experts, decided to compile a list of trends that I noted during my week-long fashion binge. Here are the looks that you should try (or keep your eyes peeled for) this spring semester.

Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, and Rachel Zoe are some notable designers who featured 1920’s inspired looks in their collections for next season. Fringe, shift dresses, drop-waists, and beaded embellishments were popular features on the apparel displayed at NYFW, not to mention dark eyes, red lips, and pin-curled hair.

Blossoms & Blooms

As can be expected in spring fashion, florals overtook the runways at Mercedes Benz FW. Some of my personal favorites were Alexander Wang, who paired his florals with leather and studs, and the classic floral and pastel experts at J. Crew.

Perhaps taking cues from the mild spring weather, designers littered the catwalks with pastel shades and Easter egg hues. Alice + Olivia, Cynthia Rowley, and Oscar de la Renta all chose shades of mint green, peach, buttercream yellow, and robin’s egg blue for their collections.

Cobain Craze

It’s been predicted for seasons, but it’s finally happening: grunge is back with a vengeance. Displayed with greasy hair, dark shades, and baggy fits on the runways, Kurt Cobain’s trademark style is looking to be quite popular this spring. Band of Outsiders, Theory, of course Marc Jacobs all nailed this look in their collections. I can’t wait to see more!

One of most entertaining things to keep updated on during Fashion Week is the makeup for each show. Makeup artists, cosmetics companies, and models often Tweet photos of the crazy shades achieved by mixing lipstick shades, layering nail lacquers, and even using lipliner as eyeliner! Yep, that’s right… Donna Karan’s models wore M.A.C. magenta lipliner around their eyes for the show!

So, this spring take notes from the awesome new styles created by the fashion masterminds of this season. Be bright with your makeup, muted with your shades, floral with your prints, and grungy with your fits, all with the grace of Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby. Happy shopping… or dreaming, anyway.
