Attractions Not to Be Missed in Indianapolis

Indianapolis – the Racing Capital of the World – is a popular tourist site, particularly due to its numerous sporting events. The most well-known events that draw in sports fans are the Indianapolis 500, NHRA U.S. Nationals, the Brickyard 400, and the Big Ten Conference Football Championship. But in addition to such terrific sports venues, Indianapolis has many other terrific attractions for tourists to enjoy. Next time you visit the Crossroads of America, check out some of these wonderful places.

The Indianapolis Museum of Art

In addition to the convenience of being within a couple miles of downtown hotels, this fabulous museum draws people in with its free admission and beautiful campus. Once inside, ask what special exhibitions are being held in The Toby – a huge theater room where expert-led conversations, unique performances, and special programs take place.

Head up the escalators to view the amazing displays in the largest encyclopedic art museum in the country. You don’t want to miss the 60-foot Robert Irwin sculpture while there.

There’s more to see outside as the gardens are beautiful. Take a path over to Lilly House, or take a hike at the Art & Nature Park.

Children’s Museum of Indianapolis

Kids love the hands-on world of discovery at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the largest museum of its kind. Less than half an hour from the hotels near the Indianapolis airport, this distinctive museum is sure to thrill kids of all ages.

Come see the family of dinosaur fossils: a teenage T-Rex, a Gorgosaurus skeleton with a brain tumor, and a fully articulated dinosaur embryo fossil named Baby Louie.

Children can dig for fossils or play interactive video games. Children and parents alike are welcome to make their own sculpture with preformed acrylic orbs. Other activities include climbing a limestone wall, exploring underground life in the science zone, or discovering what’s really lying in the mummy’s tomb.

The permanent exhibit called The Power of Children: Making a Difference displays the amazing stories of Ruby Bridges, Ryan White, and Anne Frank.

Mind-Tripping Show

If you’re already staying in a downtown hotel, drop by the Hilton where the married team of Christian and Katalina put on a surprising, interactive, funny, and sometimes intimate show called Mind Tripping. Their comedy mind-reading act takes you through a series of mind bending yet hilariously good-time adventures. Adults and teens will love this perfect mixture of Candid Camera and the Twilight Zone.

Not to Forget

While in Indianapolis, you really should jet over to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hall of Fame Museum and take a tour of the grounds. The Indiana Repertory Theatre is always a hit; the Indiana War Memorial is an impressive site and shouldn’t be missed; and Victory Field is a great minor league park, perfect for family fun.
