DJ Kid Clay is most known for his unique personality while at work, the ability to carry an audience, and his ear for new music. From starting a Free-Mix Friday Series, being a selected guest DJ for 107.5 WGCI, and spinning at clubs and college campuses throughout Midwest, it was only right for DJ Kid Clay to release his popular multi-genre mixes.

Where did your stage name come from? Everyone always asks me how I came up with my DJ name. It’s funny because I don’t have an amazing story behind it. My middle name is Clayton so I decided to shorten it with ‘Clay’ Adding the ‘Kid’ to the beginning just made the name sound complete which is how I came up with Kid Clay.
Where are you from? I am from Bolingbrook, Illinois which is a suburb outside of Chicago.
Where did you start your career? I started my career in my Uncle’s living room once I got my equipment.
What city do you represent? Chicago, Illinois
What gave you that initial push? Although I still do, I use to watch videos of DJ’s such as QBert, Jazzy Jeff, AM, and Craze (Just to name a few). I was able to do see that they didn’t just play music, they put on a show. From that moment I knew that DJin’ was going to take over my life.
How long have you been in the industry? I have been in the industry for 3 years. I haven’t been in the game as long as most people think. I believe my work ethic and love for music has allowed me to progress at a very fast pace. I know you can never stop learning, so I always continue to research and practice consistently to become a better DJ than I was the day before.
If you had to give a thank-you speech, who would you thank and what would you say? I would thank my Uncle Ed for supporting me and putting up with the loud music, terrible scratching and horrible blends in the beginning. I couldn’t have my equipment at home so if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to practice and develop confidence being behind the tables.
What makes you a softie? N/A
What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? It was always a dream of mine to make it to the NBA.
What are three hobbies of yours other than what you do? Playing basketball, watching the NFL on Sundays and going to concerts.

Rap or Hip Hop? Depends on how I’m feeling.
House or Dubstep? House.
What do you eat a lot more than anything else? Bacon.
What was the first event you ever played at/put on? The 1st event I DJed was at a bar in Wrigleyville.
What are some of your accomplishments in the field? Guest DJ on Chicago’s #1 Radio Station for Hip-Hop & R&B 107.5.
What makes you different than everybody else in the industry? What makes me different from other DJs is my song selection. As DJ’s we all might have the same music, but I guarantee we all have a unique way.
Do you produce? If so do you prefer performing or producing? I currently don’t produce but something I have already been looking into. I am really looking forward to creating my own remixes.
Who would you love to perform with? DJ Jazzy Jeff & artists such as Kanye West and Jay-Z!
What’s your longterm goal? My longterm goals are to become an International DJ who is also known for his production credits with very established artists in the industry.
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out? I like to watch ‘Sports Center’ until I fall asleep.
Funniest thing that ever happened at an event? I remember when I was booked to be the closing DJ at a huge event that included performances from artist Jeremih & Will (Day 26). I honestly had very little experience DJing in clubs and was only familiar with CDJ’s. I remember walking into the venue and noticing the equipment was some Numarks or something and telling myself ‘How do I even use those?’ Long story short, I did a terrible job which could have ruined my career if I let it. I think that event just reminds me how far I have come and how I really didn’t know that much about DJing at that time.
What advice would you give to up and coming artists? I would have to say that you have to realize you can never stop learning. Also no matter how GREAT you become, it’s always important to practice because there is always someone gunning for your spot.
What are your goals for 2013? My goals for 2013 are to spin at various clubs outside of Illinois along with earning a weekly time slot to mix on a radio station.

riginally from Australia, this week’s featured artist is DJ and producer, MODIUM, who got the taste of electronic dance music from Melbourne’s world renowned underground club scene in the mid 90’s where techno house and trance were king. Over the years he kept close to electronic music production and electronic dance music, and in recent years stepped up his passion into DJin’, resulting in evident overnight success.

From those humble beginnings of hosting college parties, he has quickly created a unique sound which is now synonymous with big room clubs, and in recent times moved to Asia where he is quickly rising through the Asia club scene with his ability to play across the spectrum of house, from soulful warm up’s to main room anthems and electro house.

On top of this is a list of regular Ibiza-style beach dance party residencies, including playing with the glamorous Ministry of Sound HEDKANDI shows where in 2011 Modium establish himself as a regular support DJ for HEDKANDI, which has seen him support and headline alongside globally recognized club DJs.

2012 was a big year from Modium, seeing him play alongside and tour with a growing number of global artists such as The Scissor Sisters and Taio Cruz and in 2012 took the step to get some of his remixes signed to labels such as RCA Records (Sony Records), Island Def Jam, Capitol Records and Atlantic Records. With a lot of energy still stored, Modium is nowhere near the ending point. He’s planning to do even more in 2013 by stepping into the British and overall European club scene.

Occupation: DJ. I guess you could say I’m a technologist of sorts, though I’ve been doing dotcoms, corporate life and strategy consulting through my career!

Where did your stage name come from? Many years ago, MOD’s were an early form of electronic music creation in the 90’s, so MOD with IUM which is a reference to electronica, became MODIUM.
Where are you from? Australia!
Where did you start your career? I’d say I started in Melbourne, Australia many years ago but then was dormant for some years until I started up again a few years ago. But Melbourne is where it all started.
What city do you represent? Hard question. I live in Singapore, but I’m from Melbourne. Both?
What gave you that initial push? For the love of House. And, not much beats the feeling of playing to a crowd erupting to your sounds.
How long have you been in the industry? On and off for about 15 years!
If you had to give a thank-you speech, who would you thank and what would you say? Thank you to Frankie Knuckles for starting it all!
What makes you a softie? I am a sucker for feel good movies like Love Actually and Notting Hill! Yes, I know…
What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? Take bigger gambles with my career!
What are three hobbies of yours other than what you do? I have a pilots license and love to fly. I love cars and turning factory purchases into muscle cars. And, on the music side, I’m a bit of a techie geek, so I love to find new ways to add more dimension to my sets and recordings.

What do you eat a lot more than anything else? Rice! Can’t avoid it in Asia.
What was the first event you ever played at/put on? In final years of high school I did the arrangement for a school concert purely electronically on a computer. Given it was mid 90’s, it was a bit of an adventure.
What are some of your accomplishments in the field? Landed the Ministry of Sound HEDKANDI anchor slot for my part of the world after only a few months of getting back into club DJ’ing, and have signed remixes to a few labels.
What makes you different than everybody else in the industry? I think everyone is different, but its a case of degrees. I do push things a bit when it comes to the tech side of things whilst DJin’, but I always make sure I still keep the basics of DJin’ in place (using decks that is). My sound is quite layered and there’s always a lot going on when I play, so I think that’s quite unique.
Do you produce? If so do you prefer performing or producing? I do produce, and whilst there is satisfaction of producing tracks (remixing for example), the buzz from a big set is a rush.
Who would you love to perform with? Many. Armin I think is still up there with his production and showmanship, and I a keen follower for his advancements in the technology side of things. He’s a one man show though!
What’s your longterm goal? More signed tracks and more global gigs leading to being constantly booked.
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out? Good food, good wine or give me a nice resort or secluded beach somewhere in South East Asia.
Funniest thing that ever happened at an event? Tough one between seeing people being rugby tackled off stage when they try to run on, or, being flashed by girls in the crowd.
What advice would you give to up and coming artists? Don’t take no lying down; and expect not a lot.
What are your goals for 2013? Branching out more globally. I have a big following in Asia (145K Facebook fans, mostly in Asia) but would love to get more into the UK and European scene.

Who is Shiftee?

Where did you start your career? NYC, doing DJ battles mainly. My first big performance was a DJ battle at a car show in Queens with my parents watching on next to tricked out rides.

What gave you that initial push? A love of Hip Hop and wanting to be a part of it.
How long have you been in the industry? I’ve been doing this professionally since 2008, but entering high level competitions since 2002. Really since I was 15.
If you had to give a thank-you speech, who would you thank and what would you say? I’d thank my parents for supporting this passion of mine despite lots of late night noise, annoying travel, and the occasional disregard for school work. I’d also thank my DJ crew the Lo-Livez who took me under their wing when I was first starting out and really helped me grow into who I am today.
What makes you a softie? I am a big fan of Snuggies. That’s an incredible invention.

What advice would you give to up and coming artists? Success is proportional to how hard you work. If you want to be successful, don’t just work hard. Work harder than everyone else.
What are your goals for 2013? Learn French, grow Hot Mom USA, tour the world including Japan & Australia, put out quality music and quality projects, drop some new turntablism technology routines and invent a new type of deli meat.

What was the first event you ever played at/put on? A huge frat party at UNC-Charlotte during my junior year of college. There was thousands of people there but I didn’t know how to mix. I was using 2 CD players without pitch control & fading songs in & out. I’d say I’ve come along way!
What are some of your accomplishments in the field? I’m real proud of the work I’ve done with Lil Jon. I’ve engineered sessions with Hip Hop legends 8Ball & MJG. Other than that I feel like I’m just getting started & some of my best stuff is yet to come!
What makes you different than everybody else in the industry? I have a real passion for Remixes, both producing & listening to them. I always have as far back as I can remember. There’s just something about taking a song & making it better or reinterpreting it and opening it up to a whole new audience.
Do you produce? If so do you prefer performing or producing? I do produce. I live in the studio so I do enjoy it, but nothing beats the feeling of performing & connecting with a crowd.
Who would you love to perform with? Partysquad. I am a big fan of what they do & would love to get the chance to rock with them.
What’s your longterm goal? To make my name go down in the history books of music. I want to be associated with quality stuff throughout my journey & for pushing music forward. Anything else will just be a bonus!
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out? I love watching movies & a few TV shows like Breaking Bad & Boardwalk Empire.
Funniest thing that ever happened at an event? I got fired from a gig for having sex in the DJ booth back in Charlotte. It was funny that night, but the next day when they told me I wasn’t allowed back in the club I stopped laughing!
What advice would you give to up and coming artists? Make sure that you love music. This industry will test you in so many ways & for me the only thing that keeps me going through the hard times is my connection to the music. It’s always been my escape, so on my worst days I think to myself ‘would I rather be doing anything else?’
What are your goals for 2013? To continue to play in new cities all over and be part of a song that charts on Billboard.

Rostam’s 30 – One on One with DJ Mark Stylz

Well boys and girls of the college world, this week on Rostam’s 30, we have for you an exclusive one on one interview of the Vegas resident DJ, Mark Stylz. DJ Mark Stylz is the Program Manager at the Palms Hotel and Casino and Resident DJ at Playboy Club, Ghostbar, Moon and Rain in Las Vegas, Nevada. Vegas known for its non-stop wild party routine, it’s definitely big props to Stylz to stay focused by holding a big role as a DJ in the Sin City’s nightlife.

How did it all start?

Beginning as a BBoy breakdancing in various parks and youth clubs throughout San Diego in the early 80’s, it was evident that spinning records would be the natural progression for a young boy who loved the hip hop culture. By the time he was 12, Mark Stylz got his first pair of turntables and hasn’t stopped rocking ever since. After 20+ years of dedication to DJin’, Stylz has had many residencies at some of Los Angeles’ hottest and most exclusive nightclubs. The combination of his turntable skills and tasteful music selection has earned him many residencies in Las Vegas and around the country, including Scottsdale, San Francisco, San Diego and Atlantic City to name a few.

Meeting one on one and watching the man at work was a superior experience for a working DJ myself. There are multiple different styles behind Stylz that keeps the party rockin’ all night long. Watching him up close gave me a chance to see it all for myself. He is phenomenal on the turntables with his scratches, drops, cuts and smooth transitions. He recently competed in RedBull Thre3style Competition dropping 5 different genres of music in his live set and placed 2nd, so again big props to the man. Performing with big names in the music industry has earned him the spot he’s at right now. At the age of 39, he says he has more energy than ever doing what he is mostly passionate about! And let’s be honest, the man knows how to keep the crowd moving on their feet all night. ‘Soldier of Sound’ is truly a title well deserved for him. Where did your stage name come from? Stylz was my B Boy name! I got the name from the movie “Teen Wolf” circa 1985.
Where are you from? San Diego, CA.
Where did you start your career? I rocked a Junior High School dance; when I was 11, with my parents’ turntable and a boom box plugged into a guitar amp. Still got the amp and the boom box.
What city do you represent? Southern California.
What gave you that initial push? It chose me when I was 4 yrs old. My parents were tired of me asking them to play my Sesame Street record, so they showed me how to do it myself. I have been fascinated with the turntable ever since. Also, being a break-dancer taught me how I wanted to hear my music. There has never been an initial push; it’s just something I have always done.
How long have you been in the industry? I played my first club at 17 (1990). It was called, Distillery (San Diego) an 18 and older club.
If you had to give a thank-you speech, who would you thank and what would you say? I would definitely thank God for the gift of sound and thank you to my family for their love and support.
What makes you a softie? My wife and daughter, and they know it.
What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? I would score movies.
What are three hobbies of yours other than what you do? Surfing, Break Dancing and Producing Music.

Rap or Hip Hop? Hip Hop, because “Hip Hop” is the culture. It’s a lifestyle. It includes DJin’, Break Dancing, Rapping, Graffiti, Writing and etc. It’s the way you think, speak and carry yourself. It’s a cultural representation of a class struggle that makes it a way of life.
House or Dubstep? House, but I love Dubstep! I fell in love with the House movement because it reminded me of the Hip Hop movement. House spawned (for lack of better words) the ‘Techno/Underground’ culture, which gave birth to multiple genres of music, like Dubstep.
What do you eat a lot more than anything else? Otter Pops, Alexander the Grape fool!
What was the first event you ever played at/put on? First nightclub was Distillery (San Diego)! Thank you DJ Kool T! But I played school dances, parties, and roller-skate rinks before that.
What are some of your accomplishments in the field? Recently, I was asked to compete in the Redbull Thre3Style battle in Las Vegas (very honored to be considered). Playing in Las Vegas for the past 8 years is a huge accomplishment in itself, which has given me the opportunity to play all across the country. Las Vegas is like the NFL of nightlife. Just making a team is hard enough, but to excel for years in the game is truly an accomplishment.
What makes you different than everybody else in the industry? My ability to read any crowd. I started DJn’ when it was about the dance floor. It still is to me. I play whatever it takes to make people dance. Reading the crowd is truly an art form. It’s not something that can be taught.
Do you produce? If so do you prefer performing or producing? Yes. Both! Each is fulfilling in its own way.
Who would you love to perform with? I would have loved to perform with the late Michael Jackson.
What’s your long-term goal? To make and play great music that affect people in a positive way.
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out? Hang out with my wife and daughter. I love our down time together! I’m truly blessed to provide for my family with my passion. Never thought a pair of turntables could do that!
Funniest thing that ever happened at an event? The very first ‘big deal’ event I ever played was my 7th grade sponsored dance. I ran for Class President so I could book myself to DJ. Well, I won, and I did. 45 minutes into the dance my amp blew. It was smoking and everything. Obviously, they had to stop the dance. Embarrassing at the moment. But looking back on it now, that’s hilarious!
What advice would you give to up and coming artists? Be true to yourself! If you‘re truly passionate about doing something for the art of it, you’ll be great at it.
What are your goals for 2013? In 2013, I will continue to educate myself on the technical side of music production and produce more tracks.

What a sexy chica! Originally from Kiev, Ukraine, we’re stepping a bit outside of the box to introduce you Juicy M, our fist Rostam’s 30 featured female DJ on LTCL Magazine.

Juicy M is one of the most successful DJs in Europe. Since 2006 she performed in more than 200 venues in more than 50 countries all over the world and this is just a beginning . There are only high profile clubs & events like 1Oak (NYC, USA), M1NT (Shanghai), Pacha (Egypt), X2 (Jakarta), Horizon Lounge (Dubai), The Rooftop (Hanoi), Trilogy (Mumbai), Wall (Miami) and many more. In 2011 Juicy played at official Backstreet Boys VIP parties in Saigon & Hanoi during their tour in Vietnam.

Also shooting for FHM, XXL and Maxim magazines, but the main accomplishment is hundreds of new friends all over the world.
What makes you different than everybody else in the industry? I’ve never tried to be different, I’m just doing my best everyday and keeping it real.
Do you produce? If so do you prefer performing or producing? I’ve just started producing music, but I’m sure I do prefer performing more. I’m doing new tracks to play them for sure.
Who would you love to perform with? My dream would be to perform back to back with Skrillex.
What’s your longterm goal? To be number 1 female DJ in the world.
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out? When the party is over there is always an after party somewhere.
Funniest thing that ever happened at an event? Apart of the fact that I fell off the stage once, the funniest thing was a week ago when 3 photographers had a real fight deciding who will be doing shots of me playing and one of them fell off the huge stage, it was like 2 meters hight.. That was an epic fail.
What advice would you give to up and coming artists? Believe in yourself and practice more!
What are your goals for 2013? To be in top ten on Beatport.

What advice would you give to up and coming artists? Stand out, be that ugly green neon splash that’s on a black canvas in the world & stay true to yourself.
What are your goals for 2013? In releasing a mixtape called ‘The Warm Up’ in February & my album ‘Good Vibes’ in March. I also want to perform a lot more. Make Bentley2Doors known at Mizzou and across the world. Also getting an independent deal would be really legit.

In 2002, after obtaining his first mixer, Hardy’s DJing career began and his life of entertaining audiences took off. Though just a college student at the time, Hardy taught himself how to mix and mastered the techniques of DJing without the guiding hand of a veteran.

After much practicing and self-critiquing, Hardy landed his first residency at a local college bar and soon after landed several other residencies in the Ann Arbor and Detroit areas. Hardy has incorporated visual mixes into his sets with the use of music videos and utilizing the Video Scratch Live plug in. Further refining his sound and technique, he started to perform at various events all around the world.

What are three hobbies of yours other than what you do? I am a sports fanatic – watching college and pro football, baseball and hockey. I also play tennis, golf, bike, etc. Other than that, I enjoy reading, going to the gym, traveling to new places and cooking.

Rap or Hip Hop? The way I see it, rapping is just a part of the Hip Hop culture. But based on the everyday man’s definition, Hip Hop.

What was the first event you ever played at/put on? Mostly house parties but I do remember first “professional” event being a volleyball tournament in college.
What are some of your accomplishments in the field? One of my goals was to play some festivals, and I was able to play three of them last year. But I would say holding a residency for 7+ years (running) has to be a rare feat in the DJ industry and especially at a well-respected venue like Necto.
What makes you different than everybody else in the industry? Everyone is unique in their sound. I would say my strongest suits include playing the right music at the right time to energize the crowd and having a very good flow from song to song. I do a lot of other things, but I think those have helped my career the most.
Do you produce? If so do you prefer performing or producing? I have been trying to produce songs for a few years now, but I’m not at a level where I’d like to be. They’re both fun in their own way.
Who would you love to perform with? I have been fortunate to play with some talented DJs, but I would say Daft Punk would be a dream come true.
What’s your longterm goal? To keep improving as a DJ at each gig, continue taking chances with the music selection and play at more festival gigs.
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out? By listening to some chill music while I fall asleep. Usually that means Jazz.
Funniest thing that ever happened at an event? There have been a ton! I would say one of my favorite memories is DJing to a club full of 200+ hearing-impaired people who were in town in for some convention. They were requesting songs and getting down, but it was really strange to have no crowd noise to go along with the music.
What advice would you give to up and coming artists? To stay true to themselves and play what they enjoy. At the same time, don’t let your ego get in the way of making sure that people at your party are having a good time.
What are your goals for 2013? To finish a few original tracks that I can start playing at my shows.

DJ Soulman made his mark in the music world as the lead vocalist for the all American rap rock pioneers, the Phunk Junkeez. Since they signed with Interscope Records, they have released six albums. From the time Soulman began his solo career, he has made his presence known as a DJ worldwide. What advice would you give to up and coming artists? Keep grinding it, do your best to stay relevant and flexible. Music is always evolving and revolving in genres and styles. So keep an open mind, and an open ear.

DJ Flipside is a Chicago native DJ who is well known for his ‘Flipside at 5′ on Chicago’s B96. Flipside, ‘The Dopest DJ on the Planet’ is best recognized by his mash-ups and his scratching ability on the turntables. He is the co-producer for Jump Smokers, and he’s worked with a lot of big names in the music industry.

The Chicago based crew that have created dance club anthems that have led industry insiders to nickname them “Kings of the Dancefloor”, serving as a natural theme and title for their debut Ultra Records release. Where did you start your career? I started by making show tapes for my talent shows. Then, I started making mixes with cassette decks before I got turntables. All while I was in Junior High, so I guess I started there.

If you had to give a thank-you speech, who would you thank and what would you say? That list is long. I’d say a short version would be thanks to God, my family, DJ Speed, Erik Bradley, B96 and my Jump Smokers crew. I could go on forever.

Do you produce? If so do you prefer performing or producing? I am the co-producer of Jump Smokers and love doing production. DJ’ing is always my love though because I’m a performer at heart.
Who would you love to perform with? Depends on the party! I’d love to rock out Nicky Romero, or Hardwell, but I’d love to rock with Justin Timberlake, or Kanye West on some other stuff.
What’s your longterm goal? I’d love to have multiple top 10 hits and create the song that will get symbolize a generation and get played past the years of my life.

What advice would you give to up and coming artists? It doesn’t come overnight, it takes lots of hard work and practice to make it! Focus on being a true talent before you focus on your gigs. When you’re prepared for your moment, you show them why you deserve to be there and that you belong!
What are your goals for 2013? Release more original production with the Jump Smokers, tour as DJ, get more placements with bigger Artists! And hopefully sleep.
