Inside the Word of Girl Crushes, on Other Girls…
Girl Crush
Boys may like girls, but did you know that girls like girls? This is and isn’t what you think. Generally, when people hear that phrase they think of it in a lesbian sexual sense. This is not what I’m trying to get at.
I got inspiration to write about this topic, which I often think about, from my brother. Frustrated and confused he said, “You know what’s annoying? Not only are guys checking you out, but girls stare at you before they even notice I’m here!” I thought this hilarious and had a good laugh, then I got to thinking. When I see a group of people walking by, my eyes are instantly drawn to not the guy, but the girls. Why? Do not think for a second that I don’t like guys, because I do! But for me, looking at girls is just so much more enjoyable. There’s just so many more things to look at and admire since I, and every other girl out there, knows how much work and effort it takes to look nice.I believe I got lucky in the sense that when I see a beautiful girl that has something I want or have wanted, I’m in awe. I’m truly happy for that girl, I just don’t see the point in acting any other way. This is where it gets messy in the girl world. Quite often when someone has something that you don’t or want is where jealousy and resentment start to build. In today’s society, girls must face the demand for perfection especially in our bodies.
Supermodels & Reality
Ever since supermodel “Twiggy” emerged, curves have been out and stick thin has been seen as perfect body image. According to The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa And Associated Disorders, 67% of girls in grades 5-12 reported that magazine pictures influenced their idea of perfect body shape, and 47% of girls in grades 5-12 reported wanting to lose weight because of magazine pictures. What’s a girl to do? Stressed by the pressures to amount to these high standards, the claws come out. If a girl appears to not have a single flaw and have the perfect life, odds are you or a friend have once said, “OMG, she’s perfect I hate her.” Kidding or not, there’s always a little truth in every joke. But really, what’s the harm in giving other girls a little credit? Even though it can seem like a competition at times, there’s no harm in throwing your opponent a compliment every once in a while.
Why So Much Love?
So now back to girls. There’s so many different kinds of infatuations you can have with other girls. From an early age, you learn to love your best friend. You think she’s awesome and you love her as a sister. Her sense of humor and telepathic abilities that are compatible with yours are like none other. What do you know? You like girls.
The most common type of feeling I have girls is when they just seem like they have their life together. Some examples of what goes on in a girl’s mind would be: “I love her outfit, her hair is so pretty, her eyes are freaking amazing, she has an amazing body, I adore her shoes, I think she’s so gorgeous!” It’s almost as if you want to be her- not saying any names (Miranda Kerr/Mila Kunis). It’s totally okay to feel like this, it’s totally normal. Girls are “majestic creatures” as my Youtube Idol Jennamarbles would say and admiring them is totally okay.
The last kind of “girl crush” is the kind you just kind of want to run away with forever and ever and live happily ever after. So I hope this inspires girls out there to just reflect within themselves and accept these feelings. I think you guys get the gist of what I’m trying to say but to solidify the message check out this video:
